The Winelands are located just under an hours drive from Cape Town and a must when visiting South Africa. It can be an easy day tour from the city to do a few wine tasting and see the quaint towns of Stellenbosch, Paarl and Franschhock but we decided to spend a few nights to really take in the area/be closer to the wine!
There are many vineyards to choose from but here are the ones that made it to the top of my list…
Delaire Graff Estate With fantastic views, great art throughout the property and killer wine to boot Delaire was one of my favorite stops on the tour. You can even stay here as they have 10 lodges on property with sweeping vistas of Stellenbosch along with a spa. Open Daily from 10am
Fairview The best wine and cheese pairings can be found at Fairview along with a good sense of humour. Taste the likes of Goats do Roam (not to be confused with Côtes du Rhône), Bored Doe or The Goatfather. Open Daily 9am-5pm
Le Petite Ferme Stop for lunch at the best eatery in Franschhoek, Le Petite Ferme, for Prosciutto wrapped Camembert, Springbok Loin, and the best dessert Amarula & Dark Chocolate Mousse! Request a table by a window as you get one of the best views of the valley.
La Motte La Motte has a great tasting room that is located right next to their maturation cellar that is only separated by large pains of glass. They also have a food and wine pairing available on Fridays where reservations are needed. Open Mon-Sat 9am-5pm
Ernie Els Wines The proprietor Ernie is a South African champion golfer and his winery should definitely be on your list. I did not partake in a tasting but being with a big golf fan we stopped by for the view and a look at the trophy room. Fun Fact: on the last Fri & Sat of the month they hold a chipping competition for prizes. Open Daily 9am -5pm
