Tucked along the shores of Lake Wakatipu just a short drive from Queenstown is Matakauri Lodge. This Relais & Chateaux property is one of three luxury Robertson Lodges in New Zealand. The weather turned on us the 2nd day so skipped Milford Sound but this was the perfect place to be stuck snuggled up by the fires.
SUITES: got lucky and was upgraded to a Suite in the main lodge. I loved the cozy vibe with fireplace and seating area. Comes with a massive bathroom complete with soaking tub and two showers- even a walk in closet. I enjoyed the complimentary mini bar with wine, popcorn & cookies/brownies that were delightful! There is a smaller Lodge Room, a Deluxe Suite with sunken living room and the Owners Cottage.
DINING: breakfast & dinner are included in your stay. Every evening you meet in the living room and enjoy canapés/cocktails and review the menu for the night. They always have an optional tasting menu but you are able to substitute an item into the tasting to make it your own. The food was phenomenal but very decadent so after a few nights I was craving a Fergburger.
ACTIVITIES: there are endless options in Queenstown- heli to Milford Sound, local wine tours and hiking trails right on property. When you are snowed in they have a library with games & tons of DVD’s. You can also enjoy the infinity pool or hot tub- weather depending.
